Web18’s new portal In.com offers news, email, music, video, games, travel, matrimony search
16 May, 2008
Web18 Software Services, the internet arm of Network18 group, has launched In.com that allows users to read and rate news, listen to music, watch videos, play games and even search for flight and hotel deals as well as look for matrimonial partners and conduct product search.
In.com is currently in beta testing stage and can be accessed only by invite through email or SMS. However, if you want to get instant access to the site, you will have to provide your mobile number to receive an invitation code through SMS.
When tried to get an invitation through email, the website displayed a message saying, “Your email invite is in a queue, and may take a week or two to process. Jump the queue by entering your mobile number for an invite, and get an Invite code instantly.” [via ContentSutra]

I think I wrote too fast.
I got the code but cannot signup using it. When I fill in the credentials and hit submit I get an error that says that "sorry we cannot create your account right now try again after some time"
So much for painless signups!
To answer Sameer's question as to how much time it takes to get the invite once you sign up for one. For me it was immediate. Once I gave my cell phone number the invitation was there in my sms inbox on my phone and it was pretty instant.
So those of you who want to test go ahead it is pretty fast for a change :-)
there r many 2 letter domain names dude. mostly country names.
i am not sure whether this will work. arent we all used to a familiar jazzed up environment flooded with content, hand picked by editors. too much whitespace pschyes me out atleast.
I heard it is Rs.10Crores (2.5million USD)...
Top of that development cost, content sourcing/alliances, people etc. etc.
CONFUSED...
Do all the people working in Web18 look dumbs to you? If they do then time will prove that. You an I will read it anyway :-)
But it is good to see that they are making people talk...
People are asking each other what is the strategy? How many things on the net today in India are backed by solid strategy anyway?
It seems like something that is finally going to evolve as a "traffic referral platform", which picks content for free, from "existing internal verticals"{some 18 of them :-) or so} to "one horizontal", also from all other guys who are good in whatever and then sending them to whoever wants them.
When people understands/"knows only how to sell" they open something like this, people "who knows what will sell" will rent in.

I thought it worked brilliantly for me.. unless there was a major change b/w 16 and 17 !!!
Looks like just another entertainment site. The layout is pretty cool, but the features are like just another site.
Moreover...when i clicked on a game, it took me to another site, these things might decrease the stickiness to the site, if you are taking me to another site to do something, then why should I come to your site next time?
I liked some parts of the site... some v interesting things which u dont see a rediff or times doing it...
How much time does it take to get invited ?
guys its a beta, its day one. there WILL be bugs thats the whole point.. its a chance to look at a product in the initial stages and be part of the process.
I thought it would be good because of the huge backing BUT I was so wrong.................
I made an Id and then logged in, it said wrong username and password and I made more user names and password and same results. hahahahhahahha I am sure now that technlogy is priceless but names are not- Sorry guys but your website lost a customer on day one when he was trying to be one of them.
The same problem happened with me as well. I created a account & then when i tried to login its says wrong username & password. And the features in the websites can be visited only after login...
Day One & so many bugs... Hope they will soon checkout this bugs.
Network 18 will make more profit by simply leasing their office space to any other website.
2 crore for in.com ...soon they will spend more money in buying in.co.in then in.in...what a mess.
They will never be the "in" thing as they are just too inept.
Soon they will be "out".
I think you miss the genius.. the mess works in their favour time will tell. I think the in.com was taken with a much much larger picture in mind.
Saw the 2 crore story on watblog.. I think the domain name is priceless..
However the number of comments on Watblog impressed me! Has it become more popular than our deal Aloo??
It's rumored that two crores were spent to get in.com.
