Online banner ad market expected to reach Rs 350 crore by 2008-09

The online banner advertisement market is expected to grow by 50 per cent and reach Rs 350 crore by the end of 2008-09 from Rs 235 crore estimated for the 2007-08 financial year, according to a study by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB. The findings are based on an annual survey of 65,000 individuals and 12,000 households in 30 cities in India.

The study, Online Banner Advertisement in India, also reveals that BFSI (Banking, Financial Services and Insurance), online industry and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) with 25%, 25% and 13% share were the leading advertisers in the online banner space during the 2007-08 financial year.

In 2008-09, the share of BFSI is expected to rise marginally to 26 per cent while the share of online companies is likely to come down to 23 per cent. Auto, FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods), Consumer Durables and Education are some of the leading sectoral advertisers in the online banner space.

Subho Ray, president, IAMAI, has said, “The advertisers need to take a serious note of the fact that 80 per cent of the (active internet) users have clicked on an online advertisement (in 2007) and make their spending plans accordingly.” Computed on a base figure of 15.4 million, this implies that 12.3 million people clicked on an ad in 2007.
